One of the more unclearly called Call of Duty games is almost ready for release, and much like last year, the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 beta is taking place across a number of weekends for various subsets of gamers.

Activision has so far stated that "the Modern Warfare II Beta is set to have a robust multiplayer experience going beyond the Core 6v6 experience with a range of carefully built maps of varied sizes, and an equally amazing set of Modes, Progression experiences, and other elements."

Unsurprisingly, getting in first requires placing a pre-order for the game. The genuine open beta for all platforms will take place during a three-day weekend at the end of September, so PC users who want to sample before they buy will have access to the game at that time.

When will the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 beta begin?

For PlayStation users who pre-ordered the game, the Modern Warfare 2 beta begins on Friday, September 16. On September 18–20, the beta will thereafter be available to all PlayStation users. Sorry PC users, but we'll have to wait another week to join the fun.

  • September 16 - 17: PlayStation pre-order players
  • September 18 - 20: All PlayStation players
  • September 22 - 23: All PlayStation players and Xbox/PC pre-orders
  • September 24 - 26: All players on all platforms

Preloading seems to be restricted to PlayStation preorder customers, which started on September 14. PC users must wait until their designated beta days during the cross-play weekend.

A total of 10 in-game rewards can be obtained by leveling up over the beta weekends. You can obtain the "Side Impact" weapon blueprint at level 15, the "Collision" operator skin at level 18, a tank skin at level 26, and yet another weapon skin at level 30, respectively. The remaining rewards are available in Activision's post.
