J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peele are two of the executive producers behind this new HBO series, which basically boils down to: what if the Jim Crow South also had Lovecraftian monsters? It looks like a very cool blend of genres so far. The show starts in August.
The story blends supernatural horror with the real-world one. As the name describes, the source material and the series will have monsters inspired by Lovecratian lore. HP Lovecraft, known for his horror and something called weird fiction, created alien godlike cosmic beings, chief and most well-known among them Cthulhu, in his works saturated with cosmic horror. That horror was not of something as mundane as ghosts but of things too profound and terrifying to comprehend.
THE PAINTER AND THE THIEF
The Painter and the Thief,” a stranger-than-fiction friendship story in which vérité techniques produce unbelievable results. I don’t mean to imply that this astonishing documentary isn’t truthful. Rather, I’m in awe of how things played out, and fully aware that there was a certain amount of manipulation — not necessarily of the facts, but certainly in the way they’re presented — required to produce the cinematic equivalent of a cubist portrait, in which an artist and her unlikely muse are made to overlap, revealing unexpected dimensions of one another over time. A painter confronts — and befriends — a man who stole two of her paintings in the documentary The Painter and the Thief. It looks like a fascinating story, and it’s worth checking out the trailer just for a glimpse at the relationship the two build, particularly as she begins to paint a portrait of him. The film comes out May 22nd.
The boys and girls in brown will be back patrolling the streets of Reno, Nevada next month. Quibi has announced that the upcoming seventh season of Reno 911 will premiere on Monday, May 4th. Amazon has a new season of Homecoming coming up, and this installment has Janelle Monáe in the lead, which seems like a solid reason to revisit the show. Good intentions. Erratic bosses. Mounting paranoia. Unforeseen consequences spiraling out of control. Heidi (Julia Roberts) works at Homecoming, a facility helping soldiers transition to civilian life. Years later she has started a new life, when the Department of Defense questions why she left Homecoming. Heidi realizes there's a whole other story behind the one she's been telling herself. The new season premieres May 22nd.
UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT
A year after ending the series, Netflix is bringing back Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt for a special episode to take advantage of its Choose Your Own Adventure-style (TM?) tech. The revival arrives May 12th.
The new Crossing swords The trailer reveals Hulu's stop-motion NSFW medieval comedy series. Once upon a time stop-motion animation was primarily associated with mythical fantasy films such as those created by the great Ray Harryhausen, or the old school family vacation fare like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Then in 2005 the twisted sketch comedy show Robot chicken, featuring Seth Green's voice talents, appeared and stop-motion lost much of that innocence. Like his animated comedy shows The Simpsons, South Park and Family man, Robot chicken These days it has become more or less an institution, with ten seasons spread over 15 years under its belt. Now two of the people responsible for Robot chickenThe hit of John Harvatine IV and Tom Root is picking up the stop-motion baton from that classic series and bringing it to Hulu for the new show. Crossing swords. Set during medieval times, Crossing swords It features characters that appear to have appeared in an 80s toy show, but behave in a way that is definitely not for children.
JERRY SEINFELD: 23 HOURS TO KILL
Jerry Seinfeld is all set for his first comedy special in more than two decades (22 years, to be precise). Titled 23 Hours to Kill, the Netflix comedy special is not just him doing comedy after a long time, it also shows that he never lost his grip on the art form. Seinfeld was an established stand-up comedian even before his TV series, Seinfeld, which he co-created with Larry David.
A trailer of Jerry Seinfeld’s 23 Hours to Kill has been released by Netflix. The trailer is interspersed with bits of footage from the comedy special. The jokes are classic Seinfeld, filled with his trademark casual humour that translates everyday instances into audiences’ guffaws. That is the thing with Seinfeld, he does not need to go to great lengths to generate laughs. He can just mine ordinary life to get his fans convulsing with laughter. Among other jokes, Seinfeld wants the audience to know how lucky they are, that he is performing in front of them and not doing anything else. For he really could be doing anything whatsoever, he claims, and he chose to tell them jokes on stage.
23 Hours to Kill arrives on May 5.
