Honor 9X

Honor 9X succeeds the Honor 8X and brings some notable aesthetic as well as performance upgrades. The notch-less full-HD+ display is sufficiently sharp and punchy, but outdoor visibility is a bit sub-par and the large size makes one-handed usage difficult. The Kirin 710F ticking at its heart handles day-to-day tasks with ease, but it stutters at graphics-intensive games, and synthetic benchmarks narrate the same story as well.

However, the phone's 4,000mAh battery is a redeeming factor and it easily lasts over a day with moderate to heavy usage. The triple rear cameras are just average in terms of their imaging output. Daylight shots turn out crisp with decent colour reproduction, but oversharpening is clearly visible. Selfies are also plagued by overprocessing. However, the night mode helps the Honor 9X punch above its weight at low-light photography.

Priced starting at Rs. 13,999, the Honor 9X is a compelling package, but the rivals from Xiaomi, Realme, and Vivo offer better value for money, both in terms of on-paper specifications and actual performance.

Samsung Galaxy M30s

The Galaxy M30s is an update to the Samsung Galaxy M30 which was launched earlier this year. This new smartphone packs in a 6,000mAh battery which is its highlight feature. We were impressed with the AMOLED display on this smartphone as it was crisp and had good viewing angles. The 6.4-inch display also got bright enough when outdoors.

Samsung has picked the Exynos 9611 SoC to power the Galaxy M30s which is the same processor powering the Galaxy A50s, There are two variants of the Galaxy M30s, 4GB RAM with 64GB of storage and 6GB of RAM with 128GB of storage. The processor isn't as powerful as the Snapdragon 675 SoC but is on par with the Snapdragon 710 SoC.

The Galaxy M30s has a triple camera setup consisting of a 48-megapixel primary sensor, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. We were happy with the camera performance of the Galaxy M30s however, it was slow to focus while shooting macros. Video recording tops out at 4K but lacks stabilisation. On the other hand, videos shot at 1080p were stabilised.

We could use the Galaxy M30s for close to 2 days with our usage. The big battery does help to keep the phone away from the charger for long. Charging the phone took about 2 and a half hours with the supplied 15W charger.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro

The Redmi Note 7 Pro is one of the most feature packed phones in its price bracket, bringing a premium design, capable octa-core processor, 48-megapixel camera, and fast charging support to the table. The phone packs a 6.3-inch full-HD+ (1080x2340 pixels) LTPS In-Cell display protected by a layer of Gorilla Glass 5. Content on the display looks sharp with crisp colors, but at the same time, it is also quite reflective. The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 675 processor ticking alongside up to 6GB of RAM. Be it heavy multitasking or games like PUBG Mobile and Asphalt 9, the phone barely struggles at all. The Redmi Note 7 Pro runs MIUI 10 based on Android 9 Pie, and even though it is rich in features, you will also have to see pesky ads.  The phone’s 48-megapixel main camera captures beautiful images with ample detail, high dynamic range, and good vibrancy. The night mode also performs well, while selfies captured by the 32-megapixel front camera also look sharp with natural colours and edge detection in bokeh mode. The 4,000mAh battery ensures that the Redmi Note 7 Pro easily sails past a full day of usage, while support for Qualcomm's Quick Charge 4.0 fast charging technology helps to quickly top up the battery.

Motorola One Action

Motorola One Action smartphone was launched on 16th August 2019. The phone comes with a 6.30-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 1080x2520 pixels and an aspect ratio of 21:9.

Motorola One Action is powered by a 2.2GHz octa-core Samsung Exynos 9609 processor. It comes with 4GB of RAM.

The Motorola One Action runs Android 9 Pie and is powered by a 3500mAh battery.

As far as the cameras are concerned, the Motorola One Action on the rear packs a 12-megapixel primary camera with an f/1.8 aperture and a pixel size of 1.25-micron; a second 16-megapixel camera with an f/2.2 aperture and a pixel size of 2.0-micron and a third 5-megapixel camera. The rear camera setup has autofocus. It sports a 12-megapixel camera on the front for selfies, with an f/2.0 aperture and a pixel size of 1.25-micron.

Motorola One Action based on Android 9 Pie and packs 128GB of inbuilt storage that can be expanded via microSD card (up to 512GB). The Motorola One Action is a dual-SIM (GSM and GSM) smartphone that accepts Nano-SIM and Nano-SIM cards.

Connectivity options on the Motorola One Action include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, GPS, Bluetooth v5.00, NFC, USB Type-C, 3G, and 4G (with support for Band 40 used by some LTE networks in India). Sensors on the phone include accelerometer, ambient light sensor, compass/ magnetometer, gyroscope, proximity sensor, and fingerprint sensor. The Motorola One Action supports face unlock.

The Motorola One Action measures 160.10 x 71.20 x 9.15mm (height x width x thickness) and weighs 176.00 grams. It was launched in Aqua Teal and Denim Blue colours.

As of 15th March 2020, Motorola One Action price in India starts at Rs. 9,999.

Xiaomi Mi A3

The Mi A3 is the third smartphone in the series of Android One smartphones from Xiaomi. It sports a 6.08-inch display with HD+ resolution. We found this to be low considering that the predecessors of this device, the Mi A1 and the Mi A2 had full HD+ panels.

The display puts out less than 300 pixels per inch and the device does not let you tweak the colour settings of the display. We found the panel to be slightly boosted for our liking. The Mi A3 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 SoC and comes in two variants, 4GB RAM with 64GB of storage and 6GB RAM with 128GB of storage. You do have the option to expand storage further as the phone has a hybrid dual-SIM slot.

We found the Snapdragon 665 to be powerful enough to handle day-to-day tasks and also games like PUBG Mobile without any lag or stutter. The Mi A3 packs in a 4,030mAh battery and has a USB Type-C port. It delivered good battery life and we could go on for close to a day and a half without needing to be charged. Xiaomi claims that the Mi A3 has support for 18W fast charging but it only gets a 10W charger in the box.

Xiaomi offers a triple camera setup on the Mi A3 consisting of a 48-megapixel primary sensor, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide angle sensor with a 118-degree field-of-view, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. At the front, it has a 32-megapixel selfie shooter. We found the camera performance to be quite good in different lighting conditions.
